Columbia University Hosts the Metropolis Intercollegiate: A Behind-the-Scenes Golf Volunteering Experience

With an interest in sports, teamwork, and university life, I was excited to volunteer at The Metropolis Intercollegiate, a collegiate men's golf tournament hosted by Columbia University at Metropolis Country Club in White Plains, New York, on October 12, 2026.

The tournament brought together 12 university golf teams for two days of competition, providing an opportunity to experience collegiate athletics from behind the scenes. The participating universities were:

  • Columbia University

  • Bryant University

  • Cornell University

  • Dartmouth College

  • Fordham University

  • College of the Holy Cross

  • Iona University

  • Lafayette College

  • North Dakota State University

  • Siena University

  • Towson University

  • Yale University

Bringing together athletes from these institutions, the tournament showcased the preparation, concentration, and sportsmanship involved in collegiate golf. I was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the event and gain a closer understanding of the work that goes into organizing a competitive sporting event.

The Tournament

I volunteered for one day, arriving early in the morning to help support the players as they prepared for their rounds. One of my responsibilities was distributing pin sheets, which contain diagrams and measurements showing the hole locations on each green. These sheets help golfers understand the layout of the greens and plan their shots throughout the round.

I also assisted as a forecaddie, watching the direction of players' shots and helping locate their balls after they landed. This required concentration, quick reactions, and awareness of the surrounding course. By tracking shots and identifying where balls landed, I helped players keep track of their shots and continue their rounds efficiently.

Through these responsibilities, I saw how even small tasks contribute to the smooth operation of a tournament. While spectators primarily see the players competing, volunteers work behind the scenes to support them and help keep the event organized. I also appreciated how the staff guided us throughout the day, creating a welcoming environment where I could learn and contribute.

Teamwork on the Course

Beyond my volunteering duties, I became more familiar with the rules and procedures of competitive golf by observing the players throughout their rounds.

For example, I learned more about what happens when a player loses a ball. Under the standard Rules of Golf, a ball is considered lost if it cannot be found within three minutes of beginning the search. The player generally must return to the location of the previous shot and play again, receiving a one-stroke penalty. This procedure is known as stroke-and-distance relief.

I also gained a better understanding of situations in which a player's shot is obstructed or another ball interferes with play. These situations must be handled according to specific rules, and players need to determine whether they can play the ball as it lies or whether relief is permitted.

Observing these situations helped me recognize that golf requires more than physical skill. Players must make decisions under pressure, follow detailed rules, and demonstrate patience and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Reflection

Volunteering at The Metropolis Intercollegiate was a rewarding opportunity to contribute to a collegiate sporting event while gaining a better understanding of golf and its rules. From distributing pin sheets to helping locate players' shots, I learned how attention to detail, teamwork, and preparation contribute to a successful tournament.

I am especially grateful to the tournament staff for their kindness and guidance, which made me feel welcome throughout the day. This experience gave me a new appreciation for the work that happens behind the scenes in collegiate sports, and I look forward to participating in similar opportunities in the future.

Special Thanks

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mark Canno for his kindness and support throughout the volunteering experience. His welcoming attitude helped make the day enjoyable and memorable.

I am also especially thankful to Coach Rich Mueller of Columbia University, whose connection made this opportunity possible. Thank you for helping me become involved in the tournament and giving me the chance to experience collegiate golf from behind the scenes.

Finally, I would like to thank the entire tournament staff for their guidance, generosity, and warm hospitality. I truly appreciate the opportunity to contribute to this event and learn from everyone involved.
