An Encounter with Interdisciplinary
Research: My Visit to OIST
Exploring New Frontiers in Science and Well-being
On March 28, I had the remarkable opportunity to visit the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Onna Village, Okinawa.
OIST Official Website
OIST is a graduate university renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, seamlessly integrating fields such as physics, biology, neuroscience, and environmental science. My interest in this institution grew when I learned that its research level is now globally recognized, often receiving international evaluations that exceed even the University of Tokyo. As someone deeply interested in beauty, health, traditional arts, and modern entertainment, I was eager to see what kind of research was being conducted at such a prestigious level.
Upon arrival, I was welcomed by a kind and professional staff member. I was then taken on a tour of several research facilities and laboratories, where guides explained the diverse range of ongoing projects.
It was incredibly striking to see how different fields connect and how researchers collaborate across traditional boundaries. I was particularly fascinated by how this interdisciplinary research might intersect with my own interests in "Beauty" and "Well-being." By learning about biology, neuroscience, and environmental science, I saw the potential to gain a deeper understanding of how beauty, health, and the human experience are interrelated. It also prompted me to consider how scientific research can contribute to achieving a more holistic sense of well-being in the future.
A Truly International Academic Community
Another aspect that left a strong impression was the international nature of the campus. At OIST, English is the primary language, and researchers and students gather here from all over the world. A unique feature of the university is the strong sense of community; many members live on or near the campus with their families. Through the guide's explanations, I deepened my understanding of fields like marine science, neuroscience, and data science, realizing how scientific research directly contributes to solving real-world challenges.
A Campus Where Innovation Meets Nature
The campus environment was breathtaking. Surrounded by lush greenery, it felt as though I was walking through a forest. At the same time, the location offers a panoramic view of the ocean, and the coastline visible from the campus cafe is stunning. This coexistence of cutting-edge research and natural beauty is a charm unique to OIST. I also noted how harmoniously the university exists alongside the local community.
Reflections and Future Outlook
This visit to OIST was a deeply stimulating experience. I felt firsthand what a truly interdisciplinary and international research environment looks like and learned how vital collaboration is to advancing scientific discovery. It also gave me an opportunity to reconsider my own approach to learning, specifically the importance of cross-disciplinary thinking and maintaining a global perspective.
Currently, as a high school student, I am working on my own independent research projects. While my work has previously focused on personal interests and fieldwork, seeing the research at OIST showed me how university-level work is supported by systematic, deep, and cross-functional collaboration.
Through this experience, I gained a new perspective on research and began to think more deeply about how I should design and develop my own studies in the future. I now aspire to become someone who can "design beauty" and perhaps even lead a university laboratory one day.
Finally, I was moved by the incredible hospitality shown by everyone who facilitated the tour. Perhaps because I have been interning in the hospitality industry for several years, I felt this warmth even more deeply. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff at OIST and the people of Okinawa. I will continue to work hard toward my goals.
