A Session with a World-Class Coach

As a high school baseball player in New York, I’ve learned the importance of discipline and perseverance. Navigating the freezing winter months can be a challenge, but the journey has been incredibly fulfilling. My passion for the game has always driven me to look for new ways to improve, yet my recent experience was something far beyond anything I had ever imagined.

I was recently granted the rare opportunity to participate in a private training session with Naoki Shirozu, a renowned professional coach who has guided elite athletes, including global superstar Shohei Ohtani.

Progress Sports - Coach Shirozu

Training under someone who has operated at the absolute pinnacle of the sport was both humbling and profoundly inspiring. This was my third time meeting Coach Shirozu and my second session with him. During our previous encounters, my nerves were so high that I could barely process the experience. This time, however, I arrived with a different mindset. I was determined to learn as much as possible, not just for my own development, but to bring valuable insights back to my teammates in New York. I am deeply grateful to Coach Shirozu for his time and generosity.

Training with Naoki Shirozu:
Adopting an Elite Mindset

Realizing the Standard of Elite Performance

From the moment the session began, it was clear that this was more than just physical practice; it was an immersion into the standards, discipline, and mental clarity required at the highest level of baseball. Coach Shirozu provided surgical instruction on how the body must work as a unified system to create efficient, explosive movement.

Below are the key technical takeaways from our session, specifically regarding mobility and preparation.

1. The Power of Preparation and Mobility

We focused heavily on the mechanics of pitching and hitting, specifically shoulder stability, scapular movement, and upper body flexibility.

One specific drill involved isolating the elbow at a 90-degree angle to target and strengthen the stabilizing muscles of the shoulder. Coach Shirozu also demonstrated how the rhythmic "opening and closing" of the chest is the engine for generating power while simultaneously protecting the body from injury, a perspective I hadn't fully considered before.

2. Generating Force from the Ground Up

We spent significant time on the relationship between lower body mobility and on-field performance. Through exercises targeting hip rotation and balance, I realized how much force is actually generated from the ground up.

Coach Shirozu emphasized that top athletes master the art of weight transfer, posture, and controlled rotational movement. I learned that even the smallest adjustments, like a subtle forward lean or stabilizing on a single leg, can create a massive difference in both stability and exit velocity.

A New Perspective on Training: Purpose over Repetition

The most impactful lesson I took home was that every movement must have a clear purpose. In the elite world, nothing is random. Each drill we performed was a direct bridge to a specific game-time scenario.

This session shifted my entire philosophy on training. It is no longer just about repetition or "putting in the hours"; it is about the deliberate process of improving body awareness and control.

Conclusion: Bringing the Elite Standard to New York

I am incredibly thankful to Coach Shirozu for such an unforgettable experience. Training in an environment so closely connected to the development of players like Shohei Ohtani has left a lasting mark on me.

This session didn't just improve my mechanics; it deepened my understanding of what it truly means to pursue excellence. I am returning to New York with greater discipline, a sharper focus, and a commitment to sharing these lessons with my team.

Thank you, Coach Shirozu. I’m ready to get back to work and bring home results.
