As part of the Future Education Kids Support Program, which I have been involved in since 2023, I had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer intern, supporting children in real-world learning environments in Okinawa. This experience gave me the chance to step outside the classroom and take on a more active, hands-on role working with children. It challenged me to adapt, communicate, and contribute in real-time settings. Through this ongoing program, I have gained practical skills and new perspectives that go beyond traditional learning.

Okinawa Fieldwork Experience: Working with Children in Real-World Settings

Adventure and Learning in Okinawa

In Okinawa, I had the chance to immerse myself in a variety of fun and educational activities with children. From whale shark boat tours to visiting scenic Manzamo and exploring OIST University, each day was filled with hands-on experiences. I also supported a lively dance performance for the kids, complete with fireworks, and assisted at the aquarium where I guided children in feeding fish and learning about marine life. These moments, filled with both learning and play, created a truly memorable experience. In addition to these activities, I also supported structured math and English sessions, which, combined with playful interactions, created a truly memorable experience.

Guiding, Supporting, and Connecting

In this fieldwork, I took on a supporting role, focusing on one-on-one engagement with each child. Compared to my previous experience working with children, I spent more time building trust and understanding each child’s unique personality and needs. I assisted with daily tasks, encouraged the children to communicate in English, and adapted my approach based on age and ability. From playful moments to teaching and guiding, I learned how to make meaningful connections while ensuring each child felt safe, supported, and engaged.

Lessons Learned and Personal Growth

This experience reinforced the importance of patience, empathy, and adaptability. I discovered how rewarding it is to make children laugh, build trust, and see them grow through learning and play. Collaborating closely with staff, teachers, and parents taught me the value of teamwork and clear communication. Most importantly, I realized my genuine passion for working with children, and I look forward to continuing to build relationships, support their learning, and carry these lessons into my future.
